Instructions

Making the cakes

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/Gas mark 4.

2. Grease and line two 20cm sandwich tins with baking parchment.

3. Beat the eggs and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy.

4. Gradually add the flour, butter and vanilla extract to the mixture, and beat until fully combined.

5. Divide the mixture between the two tins and spread it evenly.

6. Bake the cakes for 25 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of one comes out clean.

7. Leave the cakes to cool for 10 minutes in the tins before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the buttercream

1. Beat the butter with an electric mixer until light and creamy.

2. Gradually add the icing sugar, milk and vanilla extract and beat until fully combined.

3. Set aside half of the buttercream in a separate bowl.

Decorating the cakes

1. Place one of the cakes on a plate or cake stand.

2. Spread the remaining buttercream over the top of the cake.

3. Place the second cake on top of the first.

4. Spread the reserved buttercream over the top of the second cake.

5. Sprinkle the edible glitter over the buttercream.

6. Place the jam in a small bowl and heat it in the microwave for 30 seconds, until it is runny.

7. Drizzle the jam over the cake in a zig-zag pattern.

8. Arrange your favourite sweets on top of the cake to create a butterfly shape.

9. Serve the cakes with a cup of tea and enjoy!
